New York Times – “Raphael Mechoulam, ‘Father of Cannabis Research,’ Dies at 92”
Raphel Mechoulam, the Israeli researcher whose groundbreaking work contributed to broadening the scientific understanding of cannabis, has died at age 92.
Professor Mechoulam’s most notable contribution to cannabis research was his ability to isolate and independently assess the psychoactive compound of the cannabis plant – tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC – which provides users with a “high”.
Professor Mechoulam and his team were additionally able to identify the non-psychotropic structure and effects of cannabidiol, or CBD – which has become increasingly popular in global industries for its positive effects in helping with insomnia, anxiety, inflammation, and chronic pain.
Professor Mechoulam’s work ultimately earned him the nickname: “the father of cannabis research”, and will continue to shape the medicinal cannabis landscape for many years to come.
